^PAR@ ` åTEXT ` xHaven, Emily Bradley Neal1827╨1863writer of children╒s literature and editor Born on September 13, 1827, in Hudson, New York, Emily Bradley grew up from the age of six in the home of an uncle, first in Boston and later in Exeter and then New Hampton, New Hampshire. She began writing poems and stories while a schoolgirl, and under the pseudonym ╥Alice G. Lee╙ she submitted a story to Neal╒s Saturday Gazette and Lady╒s Literary Museum of Philadelphia, which printed it. More contributions followed, all warmly received by the magazine╒s editor, Joseph C. Neal, and in December 1846 the two were married. At his request she went thereafter by the name Alice. After her husband╒s death the next year she helped edit the Gazette for six years. Her particular department was ╥The Bird╒s Nest,╙ a children╒s column that she conducted under the name ╥Cousin Alice.╙ The stories and sketches published under that name were widely read and loved. She contributed also to other periodicals, including Godey╒s Lady╒s Book, Harper╒s, and Graham╒s Magazine. Alice Neal╒s first book, written for use by the General Protestant Episcopal Sunday School Union, was Helen Morton╒s Trial, 1849. The Gossips of Rivertown, 1850, was an uncharacteristically ironic novel. From 1852 to 1859 she wrote for D. Appleton & Co. a series of ╥Home Books╙ for children with such titles as No Such Word as Fail, 1852, Contentment Better Than Wealth, 1853, Patient Waiting No Loss, 1853, All╒s Not Gold That Glitters, 1853, and Out of Debt, Out of Danger, 1855. In January 1853 she married Samuel L. Haven, a New York broker with whom she lived in Mamaroneck, New York, from 1854; after 1858 they lived in James Fenimore Cooper╒s former home. Alice Haven died in Mamaroneck, New York, on August 23, 1863.
